Making edible rocks

The grade three and the ELC 2 classes are currently learning about Rocks and Minerals in Science class. They have learnt that land is made out of rocks and soil and that rocks are solid things made out of one or more minerals. We concentrated on three main types of rocks and how they are formed. A Sedimentary rock is formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and other pieces of material. A Metamorphic rock is formed under the surface of the earth from the change that takes place because of intense heat and pressure. It takes millions of years for it to be formed. Igneous rocks form when magma cools and hardens. Magma is the molten rock deep within the earth (lava).

We decided to make our own edible rocks in the lab that would represent the Sedimentary rocks (Granite, Basalt and Pumic), Metamorphic rocks (Red marble, Schrist and white and black marble) and also the Igneous rocks (Sandstone, Limestone and Chalk).
