We have incorporated reader’s theater throughout the year in library classes for grades 1 through 5. According to Scholastic, “Readers Theater is readers reading a script adapted from literature, and the audience picturing the action from hearing the script being read aloud.” It is a fun way to build fluency, confidence, listening and speaking skills, and it gives students the opportunity to work collaboratively. Most recently, grade 3 performed a reader’s theater script based on the book Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. The book leaves us wondering if a boy will step on an ant after the ant has presented him with a number of persuasive reasons not to do so. It was written by a father and daughter duo when the daughter was only fourteen years-old! Hey, Little Ant is available for check-out from the Library.
