Making Bread in PK2/3

Some people use store-bought bread and others make homemade loaves. Bread is made from grains that are easy to grow such as wheat, rye, oats, and rice. The grains are then ground to make flour.

One of the most famous stories about baking bread is “The Little Red Hen”. The story is about a little red hen who grows, harvests, grinds, makes and bakes bread all by herself, without any help from her lazy friends.

In PK2/3 the children have been reading different versions of “The Little Red Hen”. They have planted wheat and watched it grow, and talked about the process of planting and caring for the seeds. The children acted out the story and talked about the importance of always helping one another. The children also had the opportunity of baking and eating their own bread.
